This lot is becoming a food forest. First, though, more drains need to be installed with canals and swales to direct flood waters. Hugelkultur is being used to get plant roots out of flood zones and enrich the earth. This area is in a low cold spot with plenty of rain and wind, though droughts do occur. Zones: AHS 8; USDA 9b. Exotic fruit & nut trees I’m contemplating (zone applicable). The soil is depleted, heavy, stuffed with garbage of various sorts, impermeable and I think needs at least a couple years to show real signs of recovery. For example, there’s a couple sets of seeds I’d like to acquire, but – the soil is not yet ready – too much water logging to date. Will have to see how the infrastructure changes pan out – will we have a seasonal sea, a semi-marsh, or something more fitting for a food forest?
